Hybrid solar
Hybrid solar systems for homes and businesses
Solar panels, battery storage and grid connection managed by one smart inverter: 5 to 30 kW systems designed around how you use power.
What is a hybrid system?
Solar, battery and grid working as one
A hybrid solar system is built around a hybrid inverter, a single unit that controls your solar panels, your battery and your connection to the grid. It decides, second by second, whether your home runs on solar, battery or grid power, so you use as much of your own solar as possible.
Because the battery connects directly to the inverter, a hybrid system is also battery-ready: you can install the battery at the same time or add one later.
- One inverter manages solar, battery and grid, so there is less equipment on your wall
- More of your solar is used in your own home instead of being exported
- Battery-ready from day one, even if you add the battery later
- Backup power options for essential circuits
- Can join a virtual power plant (VPP) for extra value
- Monitoring app to see generation, storage and usage in real time
How it works
A day with a hybrid system
Daytime
Your panels power the home first. Extra solar charges the battery, and once it is full, the rest is exported to the grid.
Evening
As the sun goes down, the battery takes over and runs the home on the solar you stored during the day.
Overnight
If the battery runs low, the system draws from the grid automatically. You never have to switch anything.
Blackout
With backup set up, essential circuits keep running from the battery when the grid goes down.
Is it right for you?
Who a hybrid system suits
New solar installs
If you are starting from scratch, a hybrid system is the simplest way to get solar and storage working together.
Replacing an old inverter
If your existing inverter is ageing, upgrading to a hybrid inverter can make your system battery-ready.
High evening use
Homes that use most of their power after dark get the most from storing solar for later.
Homes and small businesses
Systems from 5 to 30 kW suit everything from family homes to workshops and small commercial sites.
Federal discounts
Two discounts can apply
A hybrid system can attract two separate federal discounts, both shown on your quote:
- Solar panels: the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, which reduces each year until it ends in 2030.
- Battery: the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, which steps down every six months. The next reduction is on 1 January 2027.
Backup & VPPs
Extra options
Backup power: with the right setup, essential circuits like lights, fridge and internet keep running from the battery during a blackout.
Virtual power plants: connect your battery to a VPP to earn extra value. In NSW, joining a VPP can also unlock an additional state incentive.
Hybrid solar FAQs
What is the difference between a hybrid system and adding a battery to existing solar?
A hybrid system uses one inverter that manages panels, battery and grid together. Adding a battery to existing solar usually means keeping your current solar inverter and installing a separate battery inverter (AC-coupled). Both work well; we'll recommend the better option for your home.
Can I install a hybrid system now and add the battery later?
Yes. A hybrid inverter is battery-ready, so you can start with solar only and add a compatible battery when it suits you.
Does a hybrid system qualify for the federal battery discount?
The battery in a hybrid system can qualify for the Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount if it is an approved battery installed by an accredited installer. The solar panels can also attract a separate federal discount through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.
Will a hybrid system keep my power on in a blackout?
Only if it is set up for backup. Many hybrid inverters support it, but it needs the right hardware and wiring. Tell us if backup matters to you and we'll design it in.
What size hybrid system do I need?
We size the system from your power bills, roof space and how you use energy through the day. Our hybrid systems range from 5 kW to 30 kW.
Which areas do you install hybrid systems in?
We install hybrid solar systems across Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast, Wollongong and South Coast.
